Did you reapply to the same programs? I'm in this position and am not sure if I should reapply to some of the same programs. I'm concerned that if they weren't interested in my application the first time around or if I interviewed with a program and didn't match, what would change their mind about me this time around? I have new experiences to add to my CV, but I'm not sure how to approach applications this cycle. Thanks!

You applying match or non-match?

Yes, I would still re-apply to the same programs. Ideally your application should have changed as well over the year. one of the residents in my program applied for 3 years in a row to our school and got in on the 3rd time.

What specialty are you interested in?

What changed in your application from the previous year? If nothing, then I wouldn't waste my time reapplying. If significant changes then yes, of course!

Thanks for the advice! I'm interested in peds.

I had to apply 3 years in a row until the match finally happened for me. There were a big chunk of programs, mostly the ones in the northeast, where I applied every time. I got invited to interview at most of them at least once, but I had no way of knowing which year a program was going to invite me unless I just kept reapplying. Some never invited me despite sending my application 3 times, looking at you NYU, BU, Tufts, Howard, Temple, Penn...which leads to my next point. I finally got accepted because I applied literally EVERYWHERE and stopped being dumb about restricting myself geographically.

totally. Most specialties are only 2-3 years long. if possible, sacrifice on location and just apply to as many programs as you can.

I believe we have the most peds residencies of all the specialties. Just apply to a ton of them, you will get in. One of my friends this cycle applied to literally every peds program and got in. Much easier too now since interviews are online.

Thanks for sharing your experience and advice! I'm going to definitely branch out with where I apply. I only kept it to the 2 coasts.

You should definitely apply to the same programs again. Sometimes program directors like more people than they are able to rank and the next year might be your year!
