here is my question...
for a canadian student who did not participate the match from the start and is thinking of joining the scramble....is taking a prelim yr in medicine with the purpose of eventually ending up in the categorical stream a dangerous move????

appreciate your help!

Did you register for the Canadian match? It's surprising that you didn't apply to any residency program and are waiting to scramble after the match.

Most Canadians seem to do well in the US regular match at least for Internal Medicine if that is what you want to do.

However the scramble is another story. It can be a total hit or miss. There may be positions open at good programs. But more likely than not, the remaining spots will be at undesireable progams.

if you get into a prelim program, you can certainly transition into the categorical program at the same institution or transfer to another program. However, as mentioned earlier, most decent prelim programs will be filled through the match.
