Welcome to the official hSDN nysegop pre-med resources guide. These are resources that can be helpful for you in your consideration of medical careers.
DO = Osteopathic Doctor (Same this as MD, but with the addition of an osteopathic manipulation class. DOs have the same rights as MDs and can do anything from pediatrics to cranial neurosurgery)
MD = Allopathic Doctor ("Traditional" degree)
^Note: The two residency oversight committees for the DO and MD residencies are combining, so the residency programs and options will be identical for both types of graduates in a few years.
General Path To a Medical Career:
High School: 4 years
College: 4 years
Medical School: 4 years
Residency: 3-7 years depending on specialty choice
Fellowship: 1-3 years (optional but good for academic medicine, and it can lead to a higher potential salary)
Medical School admissions requirements:
GPA > 3.7 is competitive, <3.5 is generally too low for an MD school, but it could get you into a DO school.
MCAT > 30 is good, >34 is competitive [>26 for DO]
Shadowing or Clinical Experience: Necessary
Research: Necessary for most of the "top ranked" medical schools.
