Hello,

We are conducting a questionnaire survey to investigate psychiatry trainees’ attitudes towards conceptual and philosophical issues in psychiatry and psychiatric training. The survey is takes 5-10 minutes to complete. Responses are anonymous and no personal information is recorded. Some of you may have already received and/or completed this survey as it was previously distributed to all US psychiatry program directors in May. If previously completed then please disregard.

*** Please note this survey is intended for psychiatry trainees (residents or fellows in psychiatry programs) in the US. If you are not a trainee or not a psychiatrist, please do not fill out the survey ***

Here is the survey link:

This survey is part of an on-going effort to better equip the next generation of psychiatrists to deal with the conceptual and critical issues faced by our profession. The ways in which mental health professionals conceptualize mental disorders may have important implications for clinical decision-making (Colombo et al., 2003; Lebowitz & Appelbaum, 2019). Limited research has been undertaken to assess how trainees in psychiatry approach and tackle these issues.

In psychiatry education and training, akin to cultural competence and structural competence, ‘Conceptual Competence’ has been suggested as a framework for developing a critical awareness of the conceptual assumptions underlying everyday practice in psychiatry (Aftab & Waterman, 2020). The domains of competence include the capacity to recognize conceptual assumptions, understand the relevant philosophical vocabulary, evaluate conceptual positions, and appreciate the complexity and uncertainty inherent to such issues.

Preliminary evidence from the US suggests that a majority of psychiatry trainees struggle with conceptual and philosophical questions related to psychiatry but very few of them feel that their training has adequately prepared them to address these challenges (Aftab et al. 2018).

Thank you for your help!
