I’ve just had a perspective article which I am first author on accepted for publication at a journal of good repute.
I’m wondering if this type of publication is substantial enough to warrant sending update letters to schools I am waiting to hear from or waitlisted at, or if this is not as exciting as original research and admissions committees would prefer I not bother them.
Thanks!

It doesn't hurt to show continued interest and having a first author publication, even if it is meant as a perspective (and perhaps a call to action /advocacy), is as good an excuse as any to include in an up-date letter. The adcom is not likely to see it but anyone reviewing applicants to be pulled from the waitlist may take note.
