Assume both result in pubs; ortho in JBJS or a foot and ankle journal. Not working with any big-name folks, so no positive externalities such as letters or networking...

Will doing work IN ortho give me that much of an advantage, all other things being equal?

Heresay would suggest ortho research > other research, but nobody here can know exactly how much.

Don't be fooled by thinking "big name" letter writers are necessary. It is MUCH better to have a glowing recommendation by a no name than a generic letter from a big shot who barely knows you.
