Step 1: 240
Step 2: 234 :(
Med Program: Top 10
Grades: Passed all courses (pass/fail)
ECs: Nothing special
Research: Taking a gap year for an ophthalmology specific research project
Letters of Rec: Expecting a few decent letters and one great ophthalmology specific letter

Hi Everyone, I just got back my Step 2 score of 234 and am disappointed to say the least. I'm curious if you guys think I have a shot at an ophthalmology match?

Thanks.

Yes. Nobody cares about step 2 unless:

1) it's so bad it can't be ignored

2) it's so high it can't be ignored

3) you did borderline/ bad on step 1 and needed a booster.

You have none of these problems. Don't even try and pretend you have #3 because you don't. You go to a top 10 med school and you're doing a gap year. Sounds like you will have a decent application. Take some deep breaths and tell yourself you're gonna be ok. :)
