I'll have 6 months off between med school and residency, and I was thinking of using the time to gain a little business smarts. My eventual goal is to run my own practice, or to be a partner in a smallish group.

I'd like to take a class (or a couple classes) on-line. I've already taken basic math, including 3 semesters of calc and 1 of statistics. And I'm more than computer literate. (Just in case anyone is thinking of suggesting classes that have pre-reqs, wanted to say what I took as a pre-med.)

I want to be able to set up an efficient office with low overhead. I want to do my billing right. I want to know what type of help is worthwhile to hire. Etc.

Does anyone know of of any good online practical business courses for physicians as small-business owners?

TIA!

I'd suggest enrolling in a course from some schools that offer an online MBA. For instance, I believe the University of Massachusetts allows you to enroll in a class or two to "try out" the program. You don't need to apply for the program or take the GRE. You can just enroll in a course or two.

If you wish to attend a 'crash course' then take a look at:

Good luck and please let us all know what you end up finding.

Thanks for the suggestions.

The "crash course" you linked to looks like it's aimed at physicians leaving clinical medicine for "the business world", which isn't me.

I want something specifically aimed at clinical practices, if it exists.

Here's something worth considering:

http://www.mbainaday.com/physicians.html

MBA in a Day® offers a series of content-specific seminars on business issues and practices that affect practicing physicians in today's competitive health care delivery environment. The seminar series are independent courses which cover primary topics taught in MBA-level courses in a highly condensed format, providing a basic understanding of the same essential business concepts and strategies that MBA level students study in leading graduate business school programs.

MBA in a Day® course modules focus on essential elements related to the "business side" of a medical practice, e.g., marketing, finance, leadership and management, computers and contract negotiations. Increasingly, it is these non-clinical areas that are becoming more stressful to medical practitioners, affecting their perceptions about the practice of medicine and influencing the quality of care.

That does look like it's targeted at what I was thinking of. Thanks!

HI,
i am practising physician. i have been in the practise for 2 years on the primary care practise. I am thinking about MBA HEALTHCARE ONLINE. I think it will allow me to understand the basics of the management in medicine and allow me practise efficiently my own practise. also, i think it will provide me an degree which will open up the option of non clinical or semi-clinical jobs.
i need an input regarding this. also, want to know how to choose online MBA COURSE.
PLEASE ADVISE.

I'd go with AACSB schools but that is just me. There is only one online health mgmt MBA which is George Washington Univ. I'm not sure if they have requirements for classes on their campus or not. Some schools require you to go there for a week or a few weeks for seminars. Honestly, totally online you miss out on alot of the purpose of an MBA. Especially if you have no business background. Just my opinion though.

The American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) lists 4 different programs (one is for an MBA, the other 3 are for an MMM)

http://www.acpe.org/Education/MasterDegrees/index.aspx?expand=masters

I've corresponded with one physician who did his MBA at the University of Massachusetts. He thought that an MBA would provide him with more diverse and general skills, whereas an MMM was very focused only on healthcare (Masters in Medical Management).

Several business schools will waive the GMAT if you have a doctorate degree (U Mass, Drexel, etc.). That may help with the application process.

Finally, some schools will allow you to take a course of two before applying. You can test the waters that way. If you like the online experience, then you can formally apply and transfer those credits.

If you join the PRN members network, you'll meet some other physicians who have received online MBA degrees.
