Interns participate in a diverse range of activities, from managing primary call responsibilities and dental infections in collaboration with our GPR service, to engaging in a rigorous trauma service shared with ENT and Plastic Surgery. Non-trauma days focus on dental infections, honing skills in managing various oral health issues. The surgical experience is a program cornerstone, involving active participation in orthognathic surgeries, facial trauma reconstruction, and Head & Neck Cancer, among others. In outpatient clinics, interns play a critical role in patient evaluations, surgical work-ups, post-operative follow ups, and the full scope of dental alveolar procedures. A standout feature is the intensive anesthesia training, where interns lead sedations, gaining invaluable skills in patient management. Our interns have averaged
over 200 sedations within their intern year. Additionally, a three-month rotation at the VA hospital in Lexington offers extensive exposure to dental implants and complex procedures, such as zygomatic, all-on-x, and IPS implants. This internship is an opportunity to develop and refine skills essential for a successful career in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, shaped by hands-on experiences and expert mentorship.
Call:
Interns follow a Q4 call schedule with no in-house requirement, allowing for a balance between on-call duties and personal time. Trauma calls, shared with ENT and Plastic Surgery every third day, involve managing a range of cases from facial fractures to gunshot wounds. On non-trauma days, the focus shifts primarily to infections. This includes simple & deep space odontogenic infections. For subperiosteally involved infections, our GPR colleagues assess & provide bedside treatment as a first-line response. Our ED is also well-versed in our service's scope, typically conducting their own initial assessments, including panoramic radiographs, before consulting our team.
