Oh wow, congrats (and congrats to everyone, y'all are so amazing!!) I was wondering if any of you had any tips for a fellow URM incoming sophomore hoping to get into similar schools! If you are willing to share, I was wondering what you think made you competitive/stand out (and what kind of stats are needed). Thanks!:)

I don’t know if this is allowed... sorry mods! If it isn’t, I will happily delete. My friend does pre-med zoom info sessions on different topics for URMs. Next week is one on getting into to top 30 schools with a bunch of panelists talking about their experiences with this. Check it out, I think it would be helpful!!

I printed this out my sophomore year and made sure I hit all the EC checkboxes in order of importance. I also made sure to have an underlying connecting theme that explained why I chose those ECs and how they defined me as a person. Being able to explain that well in your secondaries is part of the success.

What I think made me stand out the most in order of perceived importance:

1. Stats: I'm in the highest GPA/MCAT bracket for the AAMC Table A-23 grid. Though you don't need statistics as high if you are URM. AAMC has data tables to break down what the average matriculant for your specific sub-group would typically have to get in. You just need to be a whole STD above that. Ideally, you have a strong MCAT showing which would bolster your app.

2. Research: I have a first authorship among my publications which most every interview spent a significant amount of time talking about. Everyone does research, but few publish, and even fewer have high authorship.

3. Significant work with the underrepresented group I am a part of: This speaks for itself, but from students I would peer - advise from my University many didn't think to do this. This is part of building your story. I'm of Carribbean descent and I identify heavily with my culture, so I spent a good amount of time giving back. This is important if you intend to claim that you want to work with "XYZ" underrepresented group. You should have some experience with this so it doesn't appear baseless.

4. Hobby/Leadership: I was surprised, but quite a few interviews spent significant time asking about my hobby. I did slam poetry around the state in high school, which led into me establishing a spoken word club at my University, and participating in events that we would host even after I was no longer in leadership.

5. At the interview itself: I am good with presenting myself, and I have plenty of public speaking experience. I just wanted to add that getting the interview is important, but you also need to be able to convert that interview into an acceptance. This is more person specific advice.

6. Work experience: I'm lower SES (FAP earned), so I had to bust my ass working throughout undergrad. This is part of #5 for me, but it helped me feel comfortable and confident with interviews. I think it added an extra charm to my application, since most of my classmates are financially well off. In the words of Goro/LizzyM: "Everyone loves an underdog story"
