I'm a graduate student and was just asked to summarize the dental data in the NHANES database. I do not have a background in dentistry and my colleague who does just left for a conference. Could someone help me understand the periodontal data ranges here: NHANES 2013-2014: Oral Health - Periodontal Data Documentation, Codebook, and Frequencies
I don't understand why the loss of attachment values range from negative to positive numbers or why the ranges differ. I thought the "severe periodontal" definition from the CDC was having 2 or more sites with PD 5mm or more. But if that is the definition, then the negative values make no sense at all.
Any clarification/citations would be greatly appreciated
