Hello everyone.

Recently started my own private practice (cash only, no insurance). Wondering how others approached building a referral network in the community.

Some obvious ideas include contacting therapists/doctors in the community.

But I was wondering if others have more ideas? Do you think cold calling is better, or emails? Anyone willing to share their experience?

Thanks!

Still a resident but my idea is to do heavy electives in a sub specialty and then network with potential referral sources who would come into contact with those patients. Leaning towards doing peripartum work during my 4th year then contacting all the ob's in the area offering to take on all their pregnant, nursing, postpartum depressive, etc patients. From what I've gathered it is very difficult to find this type of psychiatrist in most places. I imagine they'll be more than happy to have someone to refer to.

Some times its also about timing.

I reached out to one PCP and was told by their office my services weren't needed and they do all their psych themselves. I figure they already had a go to psychiatrist.

Reached out to one psychiatrists in area, twice over several years, never got a call back.

Eventually through a different specialist had meeting with the PCP and Psychiatrist, and learned psychiatrist was full I will likely now be on the receiving end for both. In combination this could be one of my biggest referral sources, but I'll see in the coming coming months.

Timing can be key.

As cash only Psychiatrist, first meet up with the cash only DPC / concierge etc PCPs in your community. Then reach out to the other independent PCPs in your community. Then reach out to the Big Box shop PCPs. Same thing for therapists. Cash only, then independent, then Big Box shop therapists.
