Anybody politically connected? I have an idea for new legislation...
If you're a for-profit hospital that wants to open a new training program--since they're surely doing it out of the goodness of their hearts to address the physician "shortage" in their community--than said hospital must, over time, have an increasingly higher and higher ratio of physicians : PA/NP working in said area of care.
So let's take a hypothetical new EM program starting up at the for-profit Little Sisters of the Poor hospital in a reportedly under-served sleepy coastal city of 6 million souls with pristine beaches and amazing nightlife. In year one of their new residency, if Little Sisters has a ratio in their ED of 1 doc : 2 PA/NP, they'll need to add increasing amounts of docs in the years after they begin to graduate residents and increase their 1:2 ratio until it approaches something like 4+ docs : 1 PA/NP. Otherwise Little Sisters loses their residency accreditation since there clearly isn't a need for more doctors in the community and they are not eligible to re-apply for a decade.
Maybe I'm just post-shift crazy, but something along these lines sounds glorious.
