Neurosurgery fellowships

Hey, so i did some brief research on neurosurgery fellowships and it seems that there isnt too much information on them compared to other surgical specialties such as ortho, ophthalmology, etc. I was wondering how common is it for neurosurgery residents to pursue fellowships?

That is purely based upon if that individual goes into private practice or academic medicine. Those who desire to enter Private Practice rarely pursue fellowships because they are predominately spinal surgeons. You do not need a fellowship to practice spinal surgery. The large majority of academic neurosurgeons do pursue fellowships. These include but are not limited to endo-vascular, cerebral-vascular, neurosurgical-oncology, deep brain stimulation (rare), skull base neuro-oncology, and in some cases spinal surgery.

other fellowships...pediatrics, epilepsy (sometimes combined with functional e.g. dbs), endoscopic skull base. Definitely agree though, most private practice bound neurosurgeons don't do fellowships unless they had poor spine training during residency. For academics more and more people do fellowships though many people in academics still are able to get good positions without fellowships (mostly in oncology/general).
