Need some info re Navy residencies

Guys I need some info, I am thinking about General Surgery or GI, but have been wondering about few things
1. How competitive is GS in the Navy, and whether or not I should ask for full deferrment.

2. I am also interested in GI, still thinking about it, so the same question how competitive is it.

3. Say if I apply for deferrment and get and then go active and stay (that is the plan), how does it affect calculation of my retirement.
