How common is it for IR's to join combined vascular surgery/IR groups versus the traditional Radiology practices? Is it becoming more common?

I know there is a slick group in Northern California called www.endovascularsurgery.com and they consist of 2 docs that are neuro-IR and IR trained, 1 doc that is IR, 1 doc that is a new school vascular surgeon, 1 doc that is a cardiothoracic surgeon with catheter skills, and 2 PA's. The 2 radiologists with the IR and neuro-IR training are the founders of the group.

As IR starts to shift to a more clinical discipline, the more clinically minded IRs have been trying to develop multi-specialty practices. The group that you described is one of the early adapters, this is certainly a growing trend. There are other radiology groups that have hired vascular surgeons or vascular medicine doctors into the group.

That is fantastic! Very exciting stuff.

A multi-specialty practice like these can offer so much.

Agreed- this is the type of practice I want to establish in the future. I also want to complete a one-year vascular medicine fellowship post-IR so I be a beast in vascular medicine and market myself as a vascular expert. Doing that in addition to stroke therapy and cancer care are going to give me the versatility I've always wanted...this is why I got into medicine in the first place!!

Agree with above, the marquette interventional group's website is well layed out.

Its been awhile since I went back to my hometown so I was curious and googled the town name and interventional radiology and found http://vivassociates.com/. Cool to see these kind of practices even in small town settings. Actually, I wonder if in some ways these kind of practices are easier to set up in a small town without a bunch of groups competing? Anyone out there already practicing have thoughts?
