What are the major differences in these two degrees? I know that the MS degree is more research oriented, but are the job prospects basically the same regardless of which of degree you get?

In my opinion, MS is a gateway for a research position and for further education, such as a PhD. Data monkey!

MPH offers more opportunites for jobs in a variety of fields (international health, policy, admin...)because it is a professional degree.

It depends on where you want to end up.
