Movie: "Dr. Ehrlich's Magic Bullet", on videotape (1940). Edward G. Robinson. Black and white.

Plot: An engaging narrative of the discovery of specific staining techniques, treatment for diphtheria and the first syphilis drug.

Ethical issues addressed: human experimentation, lawsuits, public health, violations of hospital regulations, research vs. practice, racism.

Did they use an entire community of black people to do syphalis experiments on? Maybe it was a different disease but either way, what a proud day in american and heathcare history.

that was syphillis, but it was a group of black pilots in tuskegee, alabama.

My medical ethics class watched the film Gattaca, which has a lot of material related to the ethics of eugenics and cloning.

"John Q" is one....

One Flew Over the ****oo's Nest with Jack Nicholson

less ethically charged, but very very good for future MDs/DOs/all healthcare rather to see in regards to terminal care/palliative medicine....

It's called WIT and it stars Emma Thompson. I think it was an HBO movie-- we watched it at 7:30AM on a Tuesday morning in our lecture hall, and despite it being early in the morning and lots of sleepyheads, there were quite a few sniffles and sobs.

However, they portray all the doctors as complete asses and all the non-docs (nurses specifically) as compassionate and humanistic. So it's stereotypical but at least a stereotype worth exploring, as a lot of the general public tends to hold it.

You should check out "damaged care" a showtime movie about a whistleblower for a big HMO company

"Awakenings" is also a goog movie to see--DeNiro and Robin Williams. Its a true story of a research physician who uses an experimental drug to awaken the catatonic victims of a rare sleeping sickness.
