I hope u guys don't mind but just as i was reading this thread, I remembered one joke. I decided to share it with u guys.
72220mr.jpg

Two medical students were walking along the street when they saw an old man walking with his legs spread apart.

One of the students said to his friend, "I'm sure he has Petry Syndrome - those people walk just like that,"

The other student says, "No, I don't think so. The old man surely has Zovitzki Syndrome, he walks just like we learned in class."

Since they couldn't agree they decided to ask the old man. They approached the old man and one of the students said to him, "We're medical students and couldn't ignore the way you walk, but we couldn't agree on the syndrome you might have. Could you tell us what it is?"

The old man said, "I'll tell you but first you'll tell me what you think?"

Then one of the students said, "I think it's Petry Syndrome."

And the old man said, "You thought, but you're wrong."

Then the other student said, "I think you have Zovitzki Syndrome."

And the old man said, "You thought, but you're wrong."

So they asked him, "So what do you have?"

And the old man said, "I thought I needed to fart. I thought, but I was wrong."

lol...thats quite an old joke .... but anyway thanks for refreshing my memory. i wonder how i started behaving like the characters in joke.... perhaps thats the point u wanted to make :p .

First time i read about that picture was in book called "genome" by Matt Ridley as i have mentioned earlier. Somewhere in that book he had written about this painting and talked about probable cause of it. I now just remember reading about Prader willi syndrome in it........ well why am i even explaining all this to u......

Since its'original, specialists in orthopaedic have treated children suffering from spine and limb deformities. The Greek roots of orthopaedic are

Ortho (Straight) and Pais (Child)

Early orthopaedists often used brace or other forms of treatment to make the child 'straight'.

* This "orthopaedic tree" from Nicholas Andry's eighteenth-century book has become the international symbol of orthopaedic surgery. It illustrated the concept that a crooked young tree--like a deformed young child--can be helped to grow straight by the application of appropriated force.

We have this picture in our ortho department ...... it exactly depicts what orthopedics is all abt !

since motto of orthopedics nowdays is mobility i doubt Andry's tree is anymore a true representative symbol of what orthopedics stands for.

Do u know Susruta? here are illustrations of some of his instruments. note how ornate they are..... wouldnt it be great fun and lot easier for us remember instrument if they were as ornate as they used to be?

sorry for poor picture quality but unfortunately thats the only picture i could find online and this doesnt show all of his instruments. My favourite ones are Lion forceps and heron forceps (not in picture)

yeah offcourse i know who susruta was. how can i forget the father of plastic surgery. Imagine performing nasal reconstruction in those days!!

BTW nice pictures. they are as ornate as any other appliances in those days. But dont u think if we use such kind of instruments today it would be problematic to sterlise them. unnecessarily ornate designs would increase surface area of instrument and uneven surface cant be easily sterlised either. but surely it would have added some zing to otherwise boring instruments!
