Hi, I’m Austin, one of the MCAT instructors at Examkrackers. The fever of March Madness is upon us, so I thought I’d share a problem that we worked in class that uses your MCAT skills to help your #1 team win!
MCAT Think: Roy Williams, the head coach of the UNC Tar Heels, is trying to improve the 3-point percentage of his players. If the arc of the 3-point line is about 7.25 m from the center of the basket, at what speed should a forward player use when shooting at an angle of 60°to get the ball in the hoop in 3 seconds?
The tricky part of this question is remembering to calculate the initial velocity, not just the initial velocity in the x direction. Pay special attention to the question stems on the MCAT to see whether the question wants you to find a component of the initial velocity or the initial velocity itself.
