Hey all - I'm toying with the idea of applying for a managed care residency. Can anyone share with me the pros and cons of doing this? I am a PharmD/MBA Candidate for 2010 and feel I may not need a residency to work in the managed care field because of my dual degrees. Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Also, I heard getting a managed care residency can be very competitive... any tips on admissions?

Do you have any managed care intern/externship experience?

None... I wish I did though.

Too bad, that definitely would've helped. I don't really know if the MBA is enough to get your foot into the door in managed care, but I'm pretty sure it will help you out a lot in terms of moving up into management-type roles once you're in. I mean, if you know that managed care is really what you want to do, why not just invest in the extra year of training with the managed care residency so that you'll be able to get the job you want.

yeah you're right... the residency is a one-year investment. My problem is I'm torn between working retail and HOPING i can utilize my MBA as a supervisor OR going the managed care route... sadly, I know if I start in retail I may never get out.

It highly depends what in pharmacy management you want to do. If you want to be just supervisor to director, then probably you'll have enough credentialing with the MBA to get that done.

If you want specialist training in data or clinical management, Kaiser and two VA sites offer residencies specifically geared toward the program (at the PGY-2 level):

VA San Diego (Anthony Morreale) - He and Mark Buthavong run a highly skilled program that turns out really great pharmacoeconomists and managers. Dr. Morreale was the regional PBM Director for LA, Long Beach, and Las Vegas at one point of his career. Region HQ is at Los Angeles, and Michael Juzba is considered among the best pharmacoeconomists in the VA. Their residents have placed in pharmacoeconomics and managerial positions within government at Kaiser.

VA VISN 21 (Jannet Carmichael): This is VA's Regional HQ for SF, Palo Alto, Hawaii, Northern Cal, and Reno. Jan Carmichael was a past president of ASHP and is currently the regional PBM Director for those same hospitals. This residency has a clinical and informatics emphasis (so, lots of clinical and data analysis). This residency has placed residents as well in pharmacoeconomics and managerial positions, but unlike VA San Diego, this residency hasn't had anyone go private industry yet.

Kaiser (? Forgot the preceptor): Kaiser HQ runs both PE and pharmacy management emphases data and policy analysis. I don't deal with these folks that often, but I know their residents end up doing well.

You may want to get in touch with them ahead of ASHP Midyear. Speaking for the VA personnel, they are all very personable and approachable.
