Forgive my ignorance, but what the heck is this? Graduated residency 2021 and passed my two boards. Why am I getting emails for this? Is it necessary? Just another money grab by ABPMR?

It took the place of having to take boards every 10 years (or whatever the requirement was--it was before my time).

So yes, it is necessary to sign up, though it may not be necessary for you to actually do any of the question bank for a few years. I believe I'm still in the "optional" phase, though maybe last year was my last optional year. But it's a decent way to get CME.

It’s mandatory if you want to keep your board certification. You do questions every quarter and a QI project I think every 5 years. Yes, it’s pretty dumb. My work pays for it so doesn’t really bother me. The questions are mostly very easy, but they throw in a typical board question every once in a while that no one knows. The QI project is probably something you already did at work and just have to submit it.

No one knows what percentage of questions you have to get right to pass.

The questions last time were getting pretty dumb…

Q: you have a rancho 5 on rehab that is having trouble sleeping, what med should you try.

A: viagra
B: melatonin
C: coffee
D: avoid sleep in brain injury patients

Does anyone have any experience with AOBPMR? I’ve already certified through ABPMR, but as my own form of personal protest I’d love to learn about other options. Looks like the written test is $500 with oral board being $750. That’s a small fraction compared to ABPMR. Are there any legit concerns about employment or licensure?

I’ve actually done my best to only give myself 30 seconds per question…and so far I haven’t failed a test.

Im in year 3 of doing it and between it and logging my uptodate searches I get all but the specific for state cme I need each year. I only had to do a human trafficking and narcotics course the past year to get my license requirements. Works pays so I dont mind and it is SO MUCH BETTER than trying to remember a bunch of peds pmr and other things I never use every 10 years to recertify.

For this QI project nonsense what are people doing? What a waste of time....

I ended up doing the back pain QI project from AAPM&R. It’s $250 bucks but basically plug and play. And I agree, waste of time.

I am AOBPMR. No concerns about licensure or employment. I am licensed in 6 states.

When I looked at my options as a resident the abpmr made more sense to take. If I can remember correctly, the AOBPMR is cheaper up front but has higher costs long term.

Not for me. For 10 years I didn’t have to do any LA or QI. They started that last year.

What do the costs look like now?

Have you looked into NBPAS?

No I haven’t. I drank the ABPMR cool aid. What are the perks?

Once you’re board certified you just show that to NBPAS and just have to show you’re doing CME. Check it out for sure.
