Just curious, How many Med schools does one apply to?

I was just wondering. How many Med schools does someone apply too. The application fee can't be cheap and what kind of research do you guys do when looking for the ones that either: A) Fit your educational needs. or, B) The schools you know you have the best chances of getting into.
