Those who have been accepted this year without an interview (ie. Khurram), were interviewed last year and are re-applicants. In other words, yes there is an interview, and no, you do not get accepted solely on stats.

I just received an acceptance letter from NYU today. I was a re-applicant, who was wait listed last year and was not asked to re-interview. Good luck to you all!
