Internship in Ireland/UK

Can someone explain to me why the school would specifically state that they can not guarantee a spot for internship in Ireland? If you wanted to do an internship in Ireland or the UK what kind of hoops would one have to jump through?

Graduating from Ireland, its almost impossible to get an internship in the UK. You'd have to take the PLAB test I believe (not sure?) and preference is given to EU students. So being a non-UK grad AND a non-EU grad would make it quite difficult! Internship in Ireland depends on the demand for intern posts and i think they too give preference to "suitable" EU grads. However I have been told by some students there that if they're floating around the top of their class, obtaining an intern post isn't too hard. Hope that helped, and please correct me if i'm wrong!

They are expressly stating this because this point has become a problem and a big issue this year, one which may or may not result in legal action. That's all I'm going to say for the moment. With the courses changing to incorporate more irish students in the very near future, it will become increasingly harder for non-EU graduations to get an internship spot. There are no guarantees.

i talked about this with my interviewers and as long as your a citizen of the EU your equal with everyone else. that being said, theres currently a shortage of jobs avaliable in the UK, but that could change in 5 or 6 years. who knows

If you are a uk citizen, you should be fine. there is a shortage of doctors everywhere. but in both the uk and ireland, this does not translate into an increased number of jobs. there actually is a job shortage in both countries because of the way the system runs. shortage of consultants, oversupply of lower positions because of the backlog.

It's all a numbers game. Your odds are better if you are at the top of the class, but there are no guarantees. I was told that they fill jobs according to the applicants preference from the top of the class to the bottom, then they go back and any unmatched EU student will replace any non-EU student starting from the bottom of the class. Basically, if there are as many EU grads seeking employment as there are jobs, then non-EU grads won't get a job no matter what their rank in the class.

Hi there applepark, at the risk of sounding like a stalker, I've been watching your posts these past few weeks. I'm Canadian too and I was accepted to UCD but I've been agonising over whether to go or to stay in NA and reapply. I'm just glad to know other people have the same concerns that I do!

my country has been in the EU for about 2 years. i'm in my last year of med school and of course i want to escape the medical system in my country and try to do my internship elsewhere, like in Ireland for example. but i don't now exactly if my diploma is recognized, if i have to do 1 year in my country and then to leave for Ireland, how many years does the internship last... for the last 2 weeks i've been trying to find out something, but i haven't succeded yet. so, if there is anyone that can answer my questions or at last to guide me in some way, please do that. thank you!

intern year starts similar to many other places in the world - July 1st every year. For questions regarding eu status an applying for internship, call the medical council. www.irishmedicalcouncil.ie . Theoretically it's possible, but getting a spot would be difficult as irish grads get first preference, and there aren't many more spots open as some non-irish graduates have EU or irish citizenship.

No, graduates from Romanian medical schools are not elidgible to apply for the Internship year as it is not required for their registration. You may apply directly for SHO jobs.

I'm from Romania and i'll finnish stdudies in 2011, what do you belive, i have low chances to recive an internship post by 2012?
I'm EU citizen - i've read on the forum that the posts are often avaible for eu.citiz that finnish in ireland medical school and after if remain avaible eu citizen finnish in an eu medical school and non-eu from ire etc...

- one more question : What is the system ? How can i apply for a pots? where can i see posts avaible? i belive i wont find post in jobs websites..

Once again the majority of information in this post is out of date! Ignore all the posts older than 2010.

Romanian medical graduates CANNOT be accepted into internship jobs in Ireland. It has nothing to do with competition for jobs; you simply don't need to do an intern year.

Graduates of Romanian medical schools can apply directly for SHO jobs and General Medical Registration or Specialist Trainee registration with the Irish Medical Council.

As per www.rcpi.ie FAQ:

"I wish to get a Senior House Officer(SHO) or Registrar(REG) job in Ireland, where are these posts advertised?
SHO jobs are advertised in the following publications in Ireland:
Sunday Independent
Irish Medical Times
Irish Medical News
Although SHO/REG jobs may be advertised in these publications throughout the year it should be noted that the majority of posts is normally advertised during the months of January, February and March each year. "

However, Romanians still need a work permit to work in Ireland. Up-to-date immigration information can be found here:

Thanks alot for the information, verry usefull. So if i do 6 year Medical School i can apply directly for a SHO post. That's good news. Hopefully i will register to the IMC.
In your experience:- do you think i have low chances to register to the IMC ? I will need trainee registration i think..I have to get a proof of an Internship...but here in Romania Medical School last 6 years...i finnish those then i'll have to pass a national exam and enter in residency (equivalent of BST+HST)...i don't wanna take the exam and spend another year here...what can you advice me regarding the IMC Specialist Trainee Registration ? Do i need a proof of internship ? If yes... what document should i provide to them since my Medical School last 6 years and in my country isn't an intership programme? I'm confused
- You know what are the SHO's demands? i will be a fresh gratuade with: 2 years of non-clinical and 4 years of clinical experience by september 2011 ...and some extra time ''pro bonno'' work in hospital (trauma/ortopaedics/paediatric surgery/A&E)..Hopefully i will have alot of time untill january when i'll apply for sho to get papers ready.

To be honest, its impossible at this point to get an Internship job if you've graduated from a medical outside the EEA regardless of your citizenship as you can't register with the Irish medcal council as a trainee:

As far as I can read it at the IMC website, for SHO jobs you need to be on the Trainee Specialist Register which requires passing levels 1,2,3, of the PRES or 1 and 2 of the TRAS exams. After that it's if you can get hired (and I think that decision is made at the local level).

I applied to Ireland's Intern training 2011 on the end of November, and received a confirmation from HSE confirming the reception of my application.

According to the guide on the HSE website, the decision if I am eligible to apply to the 2nd stage will be on February\March 2011, and they say "Only those applicants deemed eligible at Stage 1 will be invited to proceed to Stage 2 and will be provided with intern post details and Stage 2 application documents."

My question is:
- does anyone know when will I receive an answer (two months is a really wide period..) and if I am rejected, will I receive an answer telling me that?
- Does anyone know if, last year, elegible students from the EU were accepted or the posts were not enough?

Hi,

1) Havent heard any buzz about when exactly stage 2 will start. All I can say for sure is that it hasn't happened yet.

2) Intern jobs were given to non-EU applicants last year. I think that means that all the EU applicants got intern posts as they have priority.

Just FYI-you're also required to register with the Irish medical council which is a seperate application to the one for the Internship post.
