Some international year-out funding sources are listed below. At least some of these, such as the Luce, are not explicitly limited to research but can be used for such projects. This is definitely not a comprehensive list. Also consider Marshall, Rhodes, and the like. For a great international fellowship website, see http://www.upenn.edu/curf/fellowship.html. In the spirit of spreading the wealth, feel free to forward this along to your classmates or other medical school acquaintances.

American Australian Association (Australia): Up to 4 scholarships of up to $20,000 over ? mo for research in medicine, life sciences, engineering, or mining, especially for research involving stem cells or oceanography/marine sciences; due in October

Fogarty (multiple international locations): 25-30 scholarships of $18,000-$20,000+up to $6,000 (travel, etc.) over 10+ mo for international health and/or clinical research; due in late December (after Christmas)

~50 interviewees

Fulbright (one country of your choice): varying country-dependent number and monetary value of scholarships over 9+ mo for international study; due in October

Luce (multiple East Asian countries): 15 scholarships of varying country-dependent stipends over 12 mo for living and working in an East Asian country; due in early December; previous extensive experience in Asia or a major in Asian studies is disqualifying

Rotary (one country of your choice): varying number of scholarships over 10+ mo for international projects; due date varies by application district but is usually in March-July of **the year before** the scholarship is used (yes, that's 12-18 months in advance)

Cheers and good luck!
