Grand Strand Medical Center excited to announce a position for a creative, humble, warm and enthusiastic Internal Medicine PGY-4 Staff Chief to join an experienced program director, associate program director, core faculty, and staff for our 2nd year of our new ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program in Myrtle Beach, SCat Grand Strand Medical Center beginning in July, 2016. Join a cadre of highly skilled, personable, and down-to-earth doctors who are excited about teaching in a position that offers excellent attending-level compensation for these duties.

We are seeking a candidate with a broad knowledge base, administrative abilities, superb verbal, presentation and teaching skills, an interest in medical education, and collaborative team-building skills with local clinical staff. Flexibility, creativity, dedication, and commitment to academic internal medicine excellence as well as hospital-based teaching interests/experience are required.

This new, dynamic HCA program—located in the heart of rapidly growing, Myrtle Beach, SC—is one of the crown jewels of the HCA system. Grand Strand Medical Center is a Level II Trauma Center and one of the busiest cardiac care hospitals in the state. We are affiliated with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The program will develop the staff chief as a clinician, educator and administrator. Opportunities to stay on as clinical faculty exist as the program grows. Candidates interested in an early-career position combining attending-level clinical work with residency administration prior to embarking on further fellowship training are also encouraged. Visas are accepted through ECFMG as sponsor. The staff chief opportunity encompasses both roles as an attending hospitalist and administrator who enjoys resident education. Compensation is at the level of a starting junior faculty member, with salary support from clinical duties as well as administrative efforts, and moonlighting opportunities exist as well.

The primary responsibility of the staff chief resident is to serve in teaching, administration and organization of the program. Important input is desired in structuring and building a new program. We have an emphasis on faculty development and have teaching inpatient duties involving the staff chief.
Some of the potential duties include:
• Serves as central figure in resident morale
• Demonstrates excellent knowledge base and communication skills
• Models superior bedside manner and effective problem identification and resolution
• Responsible for several educational experiences including morning report, case conferences and scheduling high quality speakers
• Serves as a clinical resource for administrative questions, arranges sick and vacation coverage
• Serves as liaison between medicine and other services in fostering strong relationships
• Serves as an integral part of the residency's program evaluation committee and clinical competency committee
• Fosters adherence to established clinic and hospital-specific protocols
• Serves as role model for resident education
• Assists and oversees the core faculty in evaluating residents and augmenting evaluation techniques for resident performance in the milestones
• Assists in writing the residency curriculum and oversees completion of evaluations of rotations.
• Mentors and counsels residents as directed by the program director
• Assists in resident recruiting
• Assists program director in ensuring appropriate clinical learning environment created
• Personally deliver teaching seminars, leads case discussions, and journal reviews as directed by the program director
• Desirable qualifications include: experience in scholarly activities, prior leadership experience, and amicable style with superior communication skills—ability to handle multiple projects at once a must
