Seriously, what the **** is it with these doctor's office? Don't any of the doctor's work on the weekends anymore, or just have the office phone forward calls to their cell phone on the weekends?

I only work Saturdays, so I'm sick of having to call up the doctor and half the time I get that bull**** that if it's a emergency, call 911 and if it's not an emergency, it can wait until Monday.

Just say it's an emergency.

it's not as annoying as my case; at least you know what to expect. when i need to make a phone call to the pcp (mind you, on the weekends), the answering service introduced herself then asked to put me on hold for ~ 5-10 mins. after spending several mins explaining the nature of my call (believe me, i spoke really fast), the answers i got were the office was closed, that they were not to take/forward/page my mess. to the intended pcp. i was so mad that i asked her what the purpose of her being there picking up the phone was. i was told her being there was to page the pcp for the hospital hiring her. my tolerance did reach the limit; before hanging up the phone, i asked her not to waste anybody's time making me explain. just tell me the reason right away.

Let's have an experiment: have a major chain pharmacy only be open M-F 9-5 and see how long it stays in business.

I don't get what you guys are bi*ching about. Pharmacists typically work 40 hrs a week, so what if you have to work on Saturdays? You had other days off. And half the time, you do end up reaching the doctor on a Saturday even though he's probably worked 50-60 hrs that week.

We're bitching about no one being at the doctor's office on the weekend to handle routine matters, and the don't even have a voicemail so I can leave messages about refills, prior authorizations, etc.

What routine matters can be resolved w/o the Dr. being there? Refills need MD auth, clarification technically should be ran past an MD. Why can't refills and PA's wait till Monday? They won't be getting done any faster if they get called in on Sat. Also, I think they might leave fax machines on all weekends.

Plus, as a floater that only works weekends I am glad they are all closed

Well, couldn't they have the fellow on-call cover that stuff?

who's paying a Dr. an obscene amount of money to sit on call all weekend for routine stuff that can wait till Monday. He isn't calling in a PA, he may ok a refill and how is he suppose to clarify a messy RX when he's at home watching football. I can think of NO situation in which a doctor's office must have someone on call on weekends.

What if you're feeling sick and it's a Saturday? Wait till Monday huh?

No situation?? What about pediatrics or OB/GYN? Transplant and other specialists? Those offices, in my opinion, should always have someone on call. "Go to the ER" isn't always a reasonable answer. When there's a doctor available who has access to charts, and a history with the patient, that's always a better option.

Dont know about the transplant people, but Peds and Obgyn outpatient office definitely does not have weekend office hours. In peds, if there's a problem then the child should be taken to the ER and the ER will get a hold of the inpatient pediatric hospitalist who will make the decision. The same applies to OBGyn where the triage unit will handle the patient first and then the Resident on call.

I mean NO situation from a Pharmacy standpoint. There are plenty of reasons why from a patient prospective. This thread was originally a rant from a pharmacy POV and my comments were on that.

Pediatricians are never supposed to have a day off. That's the one thing I HATE having to tell worried mothers, go to the ER.

Why shouldnt they get a day off? Physicians needs time off just like anyone else. If it's an emergency then go to to the ER. If your kid doesn't have an emergency then wait it out. Most parents are very good and insightful on their kid's wellbeing; they dont need a doctor to take care of their kid each step off the way.

I'm not saying they should be at the office at all times, they just should have a cell phone attached to them to receive calls from patients at all times.

uhh what?? How do you like it if i called you at all time asking about my refill every 5 minutes. The Emergency room is called emergency for a reason.

If it's an emergency, the ER physicians are probably better equipped to deal with the problem than your child's pediatrician.
