Hello SDN’ers!

I am hoping for some guidance on calculating pay and budgets for next year. Graduating in May - hopefully ODS soon after then credentialing at NAS Pensacola for 12 mo. I was on HSCP - AD scholarship not HPSP.

I understand BAS/BAH - just wondering about the special pays for dentists? The documentation online is confusing I was hoping someone could break it down for me (from experience). Also is there a 90 waiting period for these special pays? Will I receive special pays even as a credentialing O3?

Also - NAS Pensacola dentistry? Any other dentists credential there with some advice and/or non- military things to do in Pensacola?

Thanks in advance 🙏

I'll answer what I can.

Special pay: $20k per year, divided by 12. That's your monthly special pay, and you get that even when you're credentialing. Yes, there's a 90 day wait from the date of your graduation.

It isn't a common spot to credential, there will probably only be two of you. This is good and bad... you probably won't have any formal curriculum, but you can pick and choose which specialists you want to work with/how much you work with them. They have one of each OFMS, Endo, Perio, Pros. The clinics are a little spread out, so in order to meet some friends, try to get your sponsor to organize a gathering with all of the LTs from the area clinics, there are probably 5-6 of them.
As for the area... Blue Wahoo games are fun, going to the beach, fishing, and learning to sail or just renting kayaks are good things to look into.
Because you did HSCP, you will keep getting paid at the enlisted rate until you take your oath before ODS, so waiting to start ODS shouldn't be a problem like it is for some of your HPSP colleagues. It also gives you a chance to get 4 years of enlisted service, so you would get the O3E designation, which gets you a little more pay in certain scenarios. You do have to wait three months for special pays. Even if it is more than that, you won't get it until you start seeing patients, so you wouldn't get it for ODS. Also, expect that you won't see that money for a few months after you request it. They will back pay it, but it takes a bit for the request to process, so late fall you'll get a bigger payday with 3-4 months of special pay included, and after that it will be monthly.
