i was just curious what are some criteria to find out who is the best surgeon for the job? in particular, arch reconstruction. i would assume university affiliated doctors are good..but i dont want to overgeneralize that. What are some things to look for when choosing someone? thanks!

Really, the best way is word of mouth. I wouldn't make any assumptions based on private practice vs academic. In academic, you could get the attending, a senior resident, to an inexperienced intern working on you, its variable.

Ask around to see who local docs would send their families to. My residency director actually refers her friends and private patients to a private group just out of town for shoulder problems rather than the newly hired specialist.

Finally, size them up. Go talk to them, ask for second opinions, take your time if you have it and the money/insurance to do so.

Good luck.

Find a fellowship trained foot and ankle orthopedist. They are hard enough to find as it is that should narrow your search by alot.
