Hi, I was wondering how do you choose your subspecialty? I was interested in Neuro-Ophthalmology but VR seems a lot more promising. Is there any good advice to choose a subspecialty ?

Thanks. Are you doing VR yourself ? I was worried that the surgery might be difficult.
I’m doing VR fellowship currently. The surgeries are difficult to learn initially but incredibly fun. VR and neuro-op are incredibly different and play to different people/personalities. You’ll be miserable as a VR specialist if neuro-op is truly what interests you. Medical retina or uveitis could be interesting if you don’t want to do surgery as it provides a bit more diagnostic dilemma but you can still do some procedures.

Neuro-ophtha is NOT a money maker so expect to find most jobs within academic institutions. And that’s perfectly fine because we all very much need neuroopht, but I wanted you to be aware of what to expect. VR will certainly pay A LOT more but you will not be happy if neuro is really your best fit
