Honest question about the physician shortage

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you only look at white people ... or what? Some detail on this would be appreciated.

I'm not going to boil down an entire book any more efficiently than the tl;dr above. I gave the name of the book for the purpose of showing I have an actual reason to dispute the statistics provided.

I could always use more reading if you have any recommendations.

Yes, except those statistics might not be worth taking at face value. My source for this is "In Excellent Health" by Scott Atlas. The tl;dr is that the United States has significantly better health outcomes than any other country.
But that book is not about outcomes per se, but making the case that America is the best in terms of the quality of care and access to care. It can't really claim that our infant mortality rate is the best in the world because it is not. To paraphrase Dr. Atlas, "Where would you rather be when you are pregnant?"

see this plug for the book which was published before the ACA, IIRC

In Excellent Health: Setting the Record Straight on America's Health Care

Fair enough. His writing doesn't appear to have made too terribly big a splash in the public sphere but I'll bet I've used some of his radiology material lol

Fyi, those stats on CF come from the Annals of Internal Medicine. They looked at the CF registries of Canada and the US from between 1990 and 2013, controlling for age, sex, genotype etc. and found that between 2009 and 2013, the median life expectancy was 40.6 in the US and 50.9 in Canada -- the life expectancy has also increased at a greater rate in Canada.

It's no appeal to authority; only to say that I am not alone in the opinion that we have an obligation as a society to care for the most vulnerable, those who are incapable of helping themselves. I am deeply ashamed that my generation has failed yours in the teaching of American history broadly defined.

I hope I meet you on the interview trail... it would be fun to have a chat.
I mean, aren't we having a chat now?

Not one where at the end I get to pass along a recommendation to the wider admission committee.
Cool. Too bad I'm not applying to DO schools any time soon since I'm already in an MD school

I hope that you will show more kindness and consideration to your patients than you've shown here.

No sir.
It's more because of your apparent arrogance and lack of belief that human life has inherent worth.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I just don't agree with yours, nor would I want someone with your perspectives taking care of my loved ones.
That is all.
Good luck to you.

First of all, I never made any of the claims that you so preposterously are trying to cram into my mouth.

Second of all, if you truly believe that human life has inherent worth, why don't you go out and make as many babies as possible?

I have said nothing about his potential effectiveness as a doctor. I have met many doctors that were cold, impersonal, and in it for the status/money. I just wouldn't want to have a loved one taken care of by a health care professional that exhibited those attitudes. As I've said above, everyone is their own person. I just like to think that the world is moving in a positive direction and perhaps that is naive.

What claims am I trying to shove into your mouth?
When one derides someone who they are having a conversation with as a "Fake ADCOM" and someone who is "building arguments on their own insecurities", don't you think that comes across as arrogant?
I am also curious as to what morals you think society should be based on as the care provided to vulnerable citizens doesn't seem to factor in there. Genuine curiosity here.

Lol at the baby comment.

Lol at you being unable to come up with an answer to my argument

What argument? Also, doesn't there have to be a life for it to be inherently valuable? This is not equatable to producing life. Could you please give us info on what morals you think society should be measured by?

Are you trying to get your second thread of the week closed? This one will probably be accompanied by the ban hammer.

Yeah why not just ban people that you don't agree with? I bet you would like Donald Trump

Can we get a final statement on the morals that society should be measured by?

I don't have the authority to ban anyone. As for our Cheeto-in-Chief...the ONLY thing about him I would like is I would like for him to be out of office ASAP!

The realization that Trump would actually get banned from SDN were he a member just hit me like a freight train

How close they get to implementing Sharia Law

Humans are going to suffer a massive blow due to overpopulation. No one wants to address that issue.

In summary, as people become less self-disciplined, self-reliant, informed, etc the government and corporations will take control of what was the responsibility of the individual. The end.

Socialist policies lead to overpopulation. Look at ghetto communities in America. Lots of girls get pregnant just so they can get handouts for being single mothers. More kids = more money, which is why poor people tend to have more kids.

I wonder why you didn't get accepted to medical school.. listen, not everybody can grow up privileged like you. I hope for your sake, you never have to struggle. You wouldn't last in the shoes of the typical "poor" American.. you sir here typing away saying that health care is essentially a privilege, not a right, but I guarantee you've never had to live without health insurance for an extended amount of time. Honestly, best of luck to you. Hopefully you can find that maturity that was lacking in your personal statement and work on your EC's - maybe get a brand new attitude in the process too.

IDK where this myth that I didn't get accepted into med school is coming from. If you're gonna ad hominem at least do it right

Yup, totally sound logic, can't think of any other reasons. What's that? Availability of birth control, and education about its use, and abortive services access drops the rate? Nah that can't be right, it's def all intentional because they want money.

Probably the part where you posted about needing to rewrite your personal statement for when you reapply...

I've spent a significant amount of time (about a year) in one such community. You can argue that it was an attitude unique to this particular community, but I doubt it.

Why would you use birth control? You can't get baby money unless you get the baby

This account is used by a few people, not just me

As convincing as your anecdote is, I'm gonna stick to the population level studies
