I applied in the 2020-2021 cycle (3II, 2 WL, 0 A), and I'm preparing for possible reapplication.
From feedback, one of my biggest issues was my school list. While I had very high stats and decent EC's, I was definitely too cocky and I applied to too many very competitive T20 and Cali/NY schools. I am also working on my W&A, PS, and writing, but that's not the point of this post.

I've been making a new school list for the 2021-2022 cycle with people's recommendations and feedback. Can you guys critique my new list, especially in comparison to the old one?

My main concerns are:
  1. Do I have a good mix of high and mid/lower tier schools?
  2. Am I a good fit for these schools? (see school interests below)
  3. Is yield protection a thing at these schools? aka are my stats so high it lowers my chances at lower stat schools?
  4. Should I reapply to more schools that I applied to last year? I picked out some schools that I really liked from my previous list because of their location, programs, research, OOS pref, etc, even though they're really competitive.
  5. Any other school recommendations?
Stats:
MCAT 519
GPA 4.0
ORM
EC's and background in more detail: Possible high stat reapplication: need advice

School interests:
State connections: Georgia (resident), New York (sister went to college there), Cali (bf lives there)
Interests: research in personalized medicine/medical informatics, research programs that don't interfere with the curriculum, community service for the underserved especially free clinics, student wellness and organizations
Specialty interests: primary care, internal medicine, GI, OB/GYN
NON interests: rural medicine (goodbye mercer), population health, Emergency Medicine

It does look better, but I would apply to a few more schools. You don't want to go through this again.

but that means more secondaries 😭
Yeah I know, it sucks, but I agree with above--I don't think your original list was that unreasonable given your stats, but given that you got one year of rejections I would get it up to maybe ~30 schools. For example, where is WashU? I know it's a "competitive" school and those didn't give you a ton of love, but they do love their high stat applicants. Add another 2 competitive, 3 mid, and 3 low-ish schools, and call it good.

You have a gazillion hours of Ecs, but very little (60 hours non medical community service/volunteering) that's not research or medicine related. I'm surprised that you got no love, but I suspect that you need more evidence of service to others less fortunate than yourself.

For starters, rewrite all essays and have multiple eyeballs vet them. And work on interview skills.

You have a fair number of schools that will resource protect you out.

Your siblings in CA and NY do not constitute ties.

Here is a more reasonable list:
NYU
Columbia
JHU
U Penn
WashU
Northwestern
Vanderbilt
Harvard
Yale
Cornell
U Chicago
Mayo
Case
Stanford
Duke
Sinai
U VA
BU
Baylor
UCSF
Pitt
UTSW
USC/Keck
UCSD
UCLA
U MI
Rochester
Hofstra
Ohio State
U Cincy
Dartmouth
Western MI
USF Morsani
SUNY-SB
Brown
U MA
U IA
Albert Einstein
Emory
Tufts
NYU-LI
Jefferson
Miami
SLU
U WI
U CO
U VM
MCG
Mercer
IF you can get in volunteering in rural areas. I suspect that they want to see you walk the walk, not merely talk the talk.
IF you get no love by Nov, add some DO schools as insurance. Start list with both PCOMs, CUSOM, ACOM, VCOM (all except LA), LECOM-B, LECOM-E, all Touros, NYITCOM, KCU

I'll add WashU to my list for consideration. I didn't apply last year because I applied there for undergrad and was rejected, so I was a little scared. But I am a different person now with a lot more experiences so maybe they'll like me.
Thanks for info and suggestions, didn't know washU liked high stat applicants lol
Undergrad NOT medical school!
