Ok all, so Alex was kind enough to share a mnemonic he made up for the G protein second messengers... and it got me thinking :idea: Why not start a thread where we all post mnemonics & stories that we've made up/found/stole. I've found a ton of the ones in FA very helpful (& the pics/stories in CMMRS fun too), so I thought if some of us have made some up that aren't in FA we could post them... it could only help. I'll have to make up a couple to contribute now that I started a thread like this ;)

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share :love:

here's two for you guys:

what helminth do you get from undercooked fish... oh, you mean an undercooked ORCA whale??

ClonORCA (clonorchis sinensis) of course...

what about undercooked crab meat???
well, a crab kind of looks like a hexagon- which sounds like paragon...
so, paragonimus westermani

Here's another for the carpal bones...for the guys (and maybe some girls too)

"Slowly Lower Tina's Pants To The Curly Hairs"

Scaphoid
Lunate
Triquitrium
Pisiform
Trapezium
Trapezoid
Capitate
Hamate

I don't know how original or useful these are, but they helped me on tests and probably will on boards:

Fat Globs choke Vagus

1) Tase is Facial, Glossopharyngeal and Vagus
2) Choke reflex is typically Facial/Glosso IN, Vagus OUT

Everyone Ends Up Dead

Every cell has MHC Type ONE ligands for presenting ENDOsomal microbes/epitopes to cytotoxic T-cells (DEAD).

Could you please help me understand why you would use HCTZ as treatment for Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus. I have two sources (first aid for step, lippincott page 230) that say this but I do not understand why. My brain tells me that HCTZ would actually be bad for DI.

I appreciate any help you could provide.

it's one of those "central effects" that we never got a clear explination on in class because i don't think anyone really knows. but, indeed, it will make you pee about 50% less. weird, i know.

I read that the diuretic puts you in a volume depleted state, decreasing the GFR, allowing more time for Na/water to be reabsorbed at the proximal tubule. the goal actually is not to cure the disease but to alleviate the polyuria.

i just posted this in the step 1 minutiae thread, but though it might be good here too:

Heparin: Intrinsic, apTT monitoring
Warfarin: Extrinsic, PT monitoring

"Heparin HITT, Warfarin WEPT"

hydrochlorothiazide causes hypovolemia which is a stimulus for increasing reabsorption at the proximal tubule. It"s in Katzung Examination and Board Review book under the thiazides part

hePARin ---> PARtial thromboplastin time.
warfarin is the other one (PT)

Can't resist adding in my favorite mnemonic of all time--this describes the Vitamin K dependent clotting factors:

The SNoTT factors-- Seven, Nine, Ten, and Two.

Even if you don't see this on Step 1, you WILL see this question down the road.

"Use the 3 C's to cross the 3 B's" :thumbup:

Use a 3rd generations Cephalosporin to cross the Blood Brain Barrier.

Complements of ME! =)

I wish more peopole would post. I love this thread.

I don't get this one either??

I came up with this because it helps me remember the names of the bones lateral to medial, proximal to distal.

I realize the carpals have about a 0% chance of showing up on the boards, but hopefully someone can make use of this. My classmates got a kick out of it.

I like how they have parts of the name in the words to the memory gem....that always helps. And this was on my Q bank questions...so you never know.

Arg, My Phriends, Valiently Try Three HILLs!

Arginine, Methionine, Phenylalanine, Valine, Tryptophan, Threonine, Histidine, Isoleucine, Lysine

The nice thing about this one is that it doesn't leave you wondering "okay, an "A" amino acid, but which one?" Same for "T" and "P". And there happens to only be one each that starts with H and I, and both Ls are included, so that's fine.

mnemonic about the menendez brothers and the familial lipidemias

Chyle and Lyle are IDiots. the police sent four squad cars and chyle couldn't escape

Just for the record (even though I know the post I'm responding to is an old one), the Menendez brothers' names were Lyle and Eric... not Chyle.:laugh:

60-30-8-2-0 Never Let My Engine Blow

N=neutrophils and they are approx 60%
L= lymphocytes 30%
M= monocytes 8%
E= eosinophils 2%
B= basophils 0%

The percentages are the approx amount in a normal sample

I like this one because it rhymes so it sticks in my memory

most of these mnemonics are pretty horrible and not very useful, but entertaining none the less

Some of my favourites.

Stick your tongue out when you say Riboflaaaavin. (Cheliosis)
Niacin is B3, so it has the three not-nice D's (Dermatitis, dementia, death)
Phase I/II reactions are all about prostitues - HORs conjugate (1=hydro, oxido, reduct) and then II = conjugate
Lysosomal disease: Pick teh (Tay) Gay (Gauchers) Fab Krab
eNdotoxins like it Nice and hot. (Gram neg, heat stable)
Add the V's (TV, IRV, ERV, RV) or the C's (FRC + VC) to get to TLC
ACID for the immune reactions: 1-4 are Anaphylactic, Cytological, Immune complex and Delayed.
Anti Centromere for Crest.
Anti IgG from Grheumatoid arthritis
"Weskott" Aldritch has an A and an E but no M
SjOOgen - think of things that are round like the O's (eyes and mouth)
Staph Aureus: think how much it would suck to get a scalded tampon in the eye (scalded skin, toxic shock from tampons and eye infections) - it's also the + + + bug (gram, catalase and coagulase positive)

I will thank Mnemosyne herself for a good grade on this exam.

ALL hits kids under 10
AML hits adolescents
CML hits people age 30-60
CLL hits people age 60 and up

what do you think? :)

Thanks for your contributions to this thread :)

Exactly how racist/sexist/homophobic are we allowed to get before we get banned, since I have some pretty good mnemonics but I REALLY like SDN. :biglove:

Just as an example - I use a gay story to remember the bacteria with anti-phag-osomal properties. Allowed or not ?? Keeping in minds that this is strictly for recall purposes.
