I'm a residnet starting to look for a fellowship, can anyone share from their experience?
Similar threads exist for cornea and retina, didn't see for glaucoma.

How much do you get to operate? how many ops alone do you finish the year with?
how many on-calls a fellow does? Working hours?
Academic push and resources?
etc

Thanks!

Bump.

Would also be interested if people felt so inclined to share their experiences. Thanks.

How much do you get to operate?
Gradually expanding during the year, different per program and instructors. Best to speak with the current fellows when interviewing to get an up-to-date idea about which preceptors let you do more or completely do the case.
how many ops alone do you finish the year with?
50 trabs, 50 tubes, 40 CPC/MPCPC various migs throughout the year 200 MIGs cases (Xen, Hydrus, KDB, omni, istent, etc)
how many on-calls a fellow does?
every other week with two fellows
Working hours?
730 to 5pm most days unless on-call based on what site you are based out of
Academic push and resources?
Some academic push but mainly a clinical fellowship.

General advice would be to ensure enough traditional glaucoma surgery is being taught. If you decide to practice glaucoma, you need to know how to manage tubes/trabs and subsequent complications. If all you learn to do is MIGs, you are more of Comp plus doc, and you will find yourself uncomfortable with challenging glaucoma cases where low IOP is necessary.
