I was wondering if any of you have had any volunteer positions at a free clinic in the DMV area that allowed you to have hands-on experience, such as doing intake for patients? I have not had any luck in finding a clinic and I don't want to get stuck with an administrative position that will end up not counting for clinical service since I will not have any patient contact. Is there a specific clinic I could contact that you guys have worked at? Thanks in advance!

Not a free clinic, but there's the Hopkins-associated Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, MD, that has ER volunteer spots--you escort patients and families, send lab samples, wipe down beds, etc. You also have plenty of time to talk with nurses and PAs (sometimes physicians) and to shadow a bit if you like. I believe other Hopkins hospitals in the area (e.g. Sibley Memorial in DC) have similar volunteer ops. It made for great conversation during interviews.

You don't have to do anything more than be in close proximity to patients for it to count as a clinical experience. You don't need to touch them. Giving directions at an information desk or helping move patients around through the facility both count and most hospitals have a need for that kind of service from volunteers.
