I'm from Ohio and interested in going east for my FP residency. I'm looking at cities DC and north: DC, Philly, NY, Boston primarily. In my med school here, there is a negative view of how fp's are perceived on the east coast. I've heard that FP is good in the midwest or west coast but in the east they can't even get jobs. That seems really odd to me considering the number of FP residencies that exist out east. I recently also read that these cities have a large number of specialists compared to generalists. I'm wondering if this is because there is no culture in the east for patients to go see a primary care doc or because these urban areas are really underserved.
Could anyone comment on what the perception and reality is for FP's in these cities. Thanks.
