Just wondering what your favorite city/ state is. My personal favorite is jaipur, jaisalmer and jodhpur in rajhasthan. I went on a school trip there once and I got to discover its rich culture. The folk music and dances are absolutely fascinating.

aw man, there should be some tours of india that aren't school trips. i'd be up for one next summer.. anyone want to find one?

My favorite city you ask? My resounding answer would have to be:
Aamchi Mumbai (our bombay), as a true Maratha would say.

I also love a little town called Panchgani situated on the highest plateau of the western ghats, my grandfather built a small bungalow there in the 80's that I still visit every chance I get... It is the quintessential little indian village, dirt roads, farming community, authentic dresses, its like one of the most untainted original land/communities of western India. Also the weather is great year round due to its high altitude.

Pune is the third city i am quiet fond of as well.

The cities in Rajesthan are great to visit, but local life there really sucks.... but don't get me wrong, the architecture there as well as in Delhi/Agra is phenomenal.

hey...I love Chandigarh......the cosmo culture......well planned and no doubt THE CITY BEAUTIFUL lives upto its name.

I like Bangalore for all the things ......like pubs,malls......and again rare combination of Indian tradition and cosmo culture............city rhymes with young heart beat.......

MANIPAL......my university town......lush green.......hilly and rains and rains.......I simply love it.....

Hey all.
I liked Chandigarh, Mumbai, and some parts of New Delhi are okay.
I loved some of the residential areas of Ludhiana actually (it was so refreshing to see houses resembling the type back home-nice big green lawns!).
However I really enjoyed Surat out in Gujrat state (just swam, played tennis and ventured out into the small cafes/shops-ahhh a lazy hot summer it was). The ocean was reasonably close.
I gotta visit further south next time.

hey......i did mention bangalore in my post...... ;)

I heard as a tourist the cities of Kerala are really great too. Its funny that most of the cities of East india really go unmentioned, I mean who ever talks about anything in Orissa?

If it wern't for the chinese backed commie terrorists, I would really go to Assam, Mizoram (sp) and all those other really cool places on the extreme nort east.

I also plan to visit nepal which I heard is awesome

Last but not the least, if a person loves beaches besides goa, I might also look into Andaman Islands.... which I hear are really bitchin.

I really need to go and live in India for a while.
Does anyone know how long a foreign national can stay in India (in a single stretch) on a visiting visa?

yah..Bangalore is da SHIZNIT!!!! Imma be there hopefully this winter..

yeah winter is probably the best time to visit india, so you can live through the power cuts without dying in the miserable heat.

as of today (plans keep changing) my woman and i will be spending some time in goa...

what about transportation in the country?
i'll be backpacking... are there any concerns about using public overland transportation?

Make sure your vehicle has a seat belt!
Indian drivers are insane.
You will encounter similar drivers in a belt stretching from Turkey all the way to India.
The drivers in India will take enormous risks.
I recall a bus driver playing chicken with a lorrie (transport truck).
At the last minute this guy manages to get back into our lane with the bus unscathed.
In a bus that is overcrowded a seatbelt is the least of your worries-try getting a seat!
My advice though is DO NOT drive on your own-instead hire a driver. Chances of getting hurt while driving are high, since one may not know the road 'etiquette'.
A good way to travel is the Indian Rail System, eventhough it is archaic and once again overcrowded at least you eliminate the road hazard.
If I remember correctly you have to really book in advance to get an A/C car on the train otherwise you will be cooking and sweating like a porker.
One more thing, most of the 'toilets' on the train are 'latrines' i.e., you squat to do your thing and you should carry TP as there may be none available.
Happy travelling

great post.
thanks for sharing.
i've did the hippie route thru thailand/malaysia after undergrad.. so i've already had the "this is the bathroom?" culture shock thing..
...but i was (and still am) a little concerned about how to move from point A...to point B in a country that size.

thanks again.
:)

north indian states.. assam , othe places, darjeeling, gantok.. in sikkim.. are beautiful.. darjeeling is pretty bnut very polluted so.. gotta pick the rigth location for boarding.. even if a lille bit off main street.

how come no one mentioned GOA!!!!!! it rocks..

yeah india has some of the most beautiful sites around !! but it really sucks how a lot of time india is associated entirely with poverity and dirty streets and neighborhoods and poor living. I agree there are several parts of india that need to be cleaned up and there is poverty but that is not what India is all about

hmm...chandigarh was a blast. same with jalandhar. in terms of natural un-touched beauty, nothing beat the himalayan range and the trip from rishikesh to the mountains... :D

bnagalore is bangalore!!!.. nothing to beat my city... best in the world...anyday.. teh weather, teh pubs and ofcourse the girls..

bangalore and mg road, they are supposed to get a hooters soon

lol i heard about the hooters, it will be interesting to see how the indian culture will respond to that.

the response will be a firebombing most likely. I went in 96, two weeks earlier the kfc was firebombed by farmers. I'm sure there will be huge backlash by the fanatical religious right, i read that somewhere in india, couples celebrating valentines day were mobbed and beaten.

It still boggles my mind how a country that produced the kama sutra and has every movie it produces dedicated to falling in love, and a incredible AIDS epidemic, has such a suppressed view towards sexuality.

couples celebrating valentines day being an objection or a problem to the society is totally ridiculous and absurd.
This is way different from having joints like hooters for the very simple reason that vaentines day is celebrated with only one lover(most cases atleast and its not about sex only its about romance and emotions primariy), whereas something like hooters is..one day , 5 men, no emotional bodages.
what are our future generations gonna think about it? Do we need the future kids to become sexually inclined even beefore they reach puberty. thats really the question in the background which is probably not so directly prominent just because a country like india doesnt like to discuss sex with their chidren. Do we want the 13 yr old girls to be pregnant at the age of 13? and ruin their entire lives?

The point is once sometehing like hooters is introduced and accepted in the community it becomes a commonplace conception for the kids too and they think that its not a big deal if you gave away yourself to a lot of people than only your life partner and the only one. the concept of sex doesnt associate with love anymore then, it s only about pleasure and stress relief. Kamasutra is designed to make love with your spouse...so that your spouse doesnt feel dissatisfied and wander,...

Hmmm...not to turn this into some flaming debate but installing a hooters in a community does NOT equate to an immediate regression in morality in said community...

Perhaps discussing sex at an earlier age and removing the embarassment and hush-hush nature of the act would serve to socially emancipate certain groups of people (gays/women/ppl with AIDS in particular) in a country that sorely needs such liberation.

And learning about sex does not necessarily mean forgetting about love.

P.S. I like bombay. :)

Again, same here, not to turn this into a debate. I absolutely agree with your viewpoint, but thats another aspect of it. I think I still give weight to my arguement too. Although I am not sure what i give more wieight to. I feel very bad when I see the parents and eventually the kids look for fake relationships and then their life is a hell. I volunteered in the ER and I was once so o full of horror and amazement when a girl came in crying, " I hate my bf...etcetc" I think the etc can go without saying..

Valentines day is celebrated all over the place especially in big cities such as delhi, bombay bangalore etc. since they have adopted the western life style. I am guessing this objection to celebrating valentines day was probably in a small city.

In terms of hooters corrupting indian minds ... I do not think it will ave a huge impact. The bigger cities (where I am guessing hooters will open) is already so westernized. Girls in India are already getting into relationships and se etc at a very early age. The problem is not restricted to hooters but the change of culture in general. Every american show can now be seen on Tv so I doubt that opening up a hooters is going to do much.

If they can oopen hooters in china and make it a successful venture, India wld b cake. Just watch the movies these days...hooters is nothloling.

That said, I have yet to go to hooters here..lol heard their wings are really good ... lol

Rajasthan has to be the most beautiful state in India. It's the princely state. I am slightly biased though...I'm 100% Rajasthani.

yeah I love rajasthan because it has a lot of history and the indian culture is very preserved there. In a lot of big cities... bombay/delhi/ bangalore etc. you don't get to see indian culture anymore it is transforming rapidly into a westernized culture .
