COMMUNITY INFORMATION: COOS BAY/NORTH BEND

Historically, agriculture, logging and shipping have been the mainstays of the Bay Area's economy. More recently, wood products manufacturing, small entrepreneurial ventures and tourism have become increasingly important segments. Even though the heavy dependence on wood products harvesting and manufacturing has waned, the Port of Coos Bay is still one of the leading lumber and wood products shipping centers. Economic diversification is occurring slowly and steadily, bringing a variety of new products and jobs in the Bay Area. Among the newer items now being manufactured here are precision tools, sports equipment, specialty sound systems, plastics, hand-crafted furniture, myrtle wood products and specialty foods.
With the advent of fiber optics and other technological advancement, the Bay Area is beginning to attract internet-based companies. The first of these, CyberRep, recently purchased by Affiliated Computer Services call service moved from temporary space into a newly constructed facility in the spring of 2000, eventually providing more than 500 technical support jobs.
