Really curious as to what those involved in residency and fellowship program selections, as well as those hiring for practices, think about facial hair.

Myself and several male coworkers frequently have a beard and strongly prefer the look. Is it acceptable if kept well trimmed or should we consider going clean shaven in case we come across “old school” attendings who like clean shaven look for their fellows or employees?

It is very unsightly for a woman to have facial hair. Telling a woman they have a mustache is similar to falsely accusing a man of being gay. Falsely accusing a woman of being a lesbian doesn't provoke anger like happens when one points out a woman has a mustache.

For a man, it may have no effect or may have some negative effects.

I had a trimmed beard during my interviews and I don’t think it made any difference at all. As long as it’s trimmed and well-kept, it looks professional.
