UTHSC
Pros
  • Better chances to match to specialties
  • Higher Step scores
  • In Memphis so lively but also dangerous
  • 3 hours from home
Cons
  • It is in memphis
  • Larger class size (170)

ETSU
Pros
  • Small class size (75) and very family oriented
  • Professors seem to really care about each student and how they are doing
Cons
  • It is in Johnson City (although pretty, very dead)
  • I have heard it may limit chances of getting matched to specialties?? not sure how true this is
  • 4 hours away from home

UTHSC. Larger class size less emphasis on primary care and just more opportunities overall. Also larger classes equate to a better known entity when applying for residencies. You seem to not want to live in Memphis but I think the clinical opportunities may be great there in terms of pathology and working with diverse populations. You always want to keep your options open. If family friendly and primary care lean or even more general specialties like EMED, neuro, anesthesiology, peds, IM general surgery, these can be matched from anywhere so ETSU can work really well for you. Not everyone needs to do derm! Good luck
