Emory Visit Day

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Uhm, I just signed up for Emory Visit day! But when i registered it only said I was registered for the optional thursday day...but not the (main event) friday. Is this normal? Are the friday events full? Or is my registration in the friday event assumed by way of submitting the registration form in the first place?

Oof I also hope I can still "crash with a student." That would make this whole thing much more affordable.

Contact Shannon Shelton: [email protected]

I had problems when I registered and had to do it all over again so I would check with her to make sure everything went through ok.

Okay, I just registered for both days too! And to UCMaroon and heej, I also chose Social Epi! :)

For west coast people or people flying in from far away, how are you taking care of the night of the 24th? I'm not sure if student hosts are available for that night since the two dates marked on the housing form are 3/25 and 3/26...

Also, there's no separate form for the CDC Museum tour right? I can't wait to bring my camera and get touristy pics in front of the CDC. :-D

I signed up for the tour on the Thursday additional activities RSVP website. They give you options to sign up for different time slots.

I searched a lot, but I can't find it. Do you have the link? I hope it's not too late since I already submitted my forms earlier.

You should be ok. Email Shannon if you can't log back in. The school will literally bend over backwards for it's students.

Also I hope you all tour the CDC. It's hard to overstate how amazing having it next door is..

i'm coming from the west coast and registered for both days as well!

Unfortunately I can't come to the visit day anymore :(

I am bummed I will be missing all the meet ups and the warm Atlanta weather. Will you guys let me know how it goes? :D

Agreed! I hope I can still get into the CDC tour because I must have missed it when I was doing the forms. Hopefully, their office will get back to me on Monday. :)

Does anyone know if we have to go on the 'official' tour? Or can we check out the CDC by ourselves? I didn't sign up, but maybe they will let me do it there.

No, you won't be able to just walk around CDC by yourself (if you don't have security clearance, you have to be escorted).

The above poster is right, security is pretty tight here. You'll have to go with the emory group but if you didn't sign up, I doubt it'll be a problem.

So I haven't heard back from housing yet, and I'm thinking of planning for a hotel. I looked at the University Inn and Emory Inn and they seem pretty expensive. :-(

Where are you guys/gals staying?

I got a good deal using my AAA card # at the Doubletree (the North Druid Hills/Emory one)

I'm still waiting to hear back from the Housing coordinator about crashing with a grad student....

I registered for both days. I think the CDC tour will be interesting and I'd like to meet the student groups. I am staying at the doubletree that's about 10 minutes away.

I was wondering, how do you plan to get from the Doubletree to Rollins?

Oooh, how do you do that? May I ask how much is the "good deal"? :-D I don't have a car or AAA, but I have a friend who does. Can they book the hotel, or does it have to be me?

I'm in Charlotte so I'll be making the drive down there(about 4 hours). If you end up staying at the Doubletree I would have no problem giving you a ride over to Emory (as long as you promise you're not an axe murderer).

Me too. I called earlier, and they said it's actually break for their students over there. The coordinator is a student too, so she might not get back to us as quickly.

Haha. I promise I don't even know how to chop wood, let alone own an axe. :D

I think I'll do more research on finding the most economical and closeby hotel. Will update you.

I was looking up hotel info last night, and it looks like Univeristy Inn (or maybe it was Emory Inn) is already booked up for those dates.

I'm only going to be there on Friday; I'm so sad that I'm missing the CDC tour!

For those who were interested in a meetup at Emory would 4pm on Thursday the 25th work for anyone?

I was told there is a coffeeshop/sub place in the basement of Rollins that may be a good place to meet. I figured 4 since it is after the tours and before the student organizations mixer. If people are still interested in doing this let me know! :)

great! lets all meet at 4

Unfortunately, I've decided not to attend Visit Emory... but I have (unofficially) decided to attend Emory next year! I know that probably sounds weird, but I'm just not able to work out travel logistics (my spring break doesn't start till next Saturday). Hopefully I'll be meeting some of you in the fall! Anybody else decide on Emory?

If you don't mind me asking, what made you decide on Emory?

Are any of you bringing your resumes for the research fair on Friday? If so, how many copies?

I am definitely bringing copies of mine, although I have no clue how many. Haven't gotten there yet.

Love2bfit- I am 99% set on Emory as well!

I think I've decided to attend Emory too. I'm hoping to make it official after this visit :)

I'm bringing my resume too. Maybe 4-5 copies?

yayyyy for those who have decided on emory as well! To answer your question, Music... here are my main reasons:

-Emory's reputation as an academic institution
-strong job connections (CDC, etc.)
-research opportunities in the surrounding area (I really want to do research!)
-low cost of living (I'm done paying out the nose to live in NY, heh)
-cheaper cost of attendance (relatively speaking)
-gorgeous weather! (I'm coming from undergrad in upstate NY...too much snow/rain!)
-the wonderful things I've heard from people who have been to the Atlanta area... especially about the kind demeanor of the people down there!
-I want to try living somewhere completely different

haha, I know... lots of seemingly unrelated reasons. So, there you go! Good luck on your decision! :)

I didn't come to visit Emory but these two reasons essentially drove my decision, coupled with my fathers sabbatical experiences.

Also, don't be mislead about the weather. I'm from Maine (similar to upstate NY) and thought I was moving to a sunny city. It's not as great as one would think. It was spitting snow this morning with a high of 46 today...

Haha, so it may not be up there with sunny CA... but Binghamton, NY is nearly as rainy/gross as Seattle, so I'll take what I can get. I'm glad to hear my reasons are accurate descriptions though!

i'm sitting at the cafe, it's prettty packed. how are we supposed to meet?

If you see this I'm tall with a green floral shirt. Ill be there at 4!

It was great to meet you Heej, hope you had a great rest of your trip.

I was sad I didn't see anyone else! I waited until I got kicked out to make room for the student mixer.

Hope everyone had a great trip! :)

I showed up and asked around for the SDN group, although nobody seemed to know what it was! Although now that I think about it, I might have been on the wrong level, plaza level maybe?

it was wayyyy too crazy to meet up during the convos on tap thing. the emory visit day REALLY is making things 10x harder for me to decide!! i'm visiting columbia on april 9th but i don't think i'll be able to make a decision!! any one else in the same position?

Nice meeting you too! I really liked the campus, students, and the faculty. But not sure if I'll enjoy living in Atlanta after seeing all the cars. The roads around the campus were not pedestrian friendly. Seems like it'd be a big change in lifestyle for me.

I am sorry to hear that :-(

What do you think you are going to do now?

Just gotta think through it more, I guess. But it'd probably be best to just go to Emory and live with the traffic haha.

Oh man,

Atlanta traffic is as bad as Los Angeles traffic, but at least LA is close to the beach.

Emory really brought it's A-game to Visit Emory. I went in thinking Emory was definite second choice for me. After that weekend - lets hope my first choice school brings it's A-game to Open House.

The traffic though. All the driving, the cars, the sprawl...

I think I feel the same. I liked the school and the Visit Day, but I'm not sure if I will enjoy living in Atlanta.
