A pond has become a grassland. What has occurred?
a) mutation
b) genetic drift
c) ecological succession
d) punctuated equilibrium
e) secondary succession

Why can't the answer be E?

the answer is C

Is it because the question doesn't describe that the pond supported life previously?

Primary is when glarcia and lava you are correct but the pond coming to land is not secondary secondary you need something to get wipe out and life come about!

Primary succession: First to grow/exist there
Secondary succession: Something grows/exists, gets wiped out and replaced
Ecological succession: Gradual change of landscape/ecosystem.
