I'm leaning towards NYCPM but I'm concerned about how this limited scope will affect my externship training and residency outside of NY state

When you're in residency, you don't practice under the state scope of practice for podiatry. This is how you are able to scrub on orthopedic surgery, general surgery, etc. The only downfall about some of these other programs is the attendings. They must practice under state scope, which can ultimately effect how much exposure you receive while on that service.

Then as an attending there are hospitals that further restrict what a pod is allowed to do, this varies from hospital to hospital. Shadowed an attending one time that said that they arent allowed hospital admission privilages and another that needed a full physical done by an MD in order to under go surgical procedures (which constitutes medical clearance, although this is mostly done for anything like cardiothoracic procedures). If anything, its less you gotta worry about and better to focus on your scope of practice, let the internal guys do what they are trained to do and leave the surgical pod stuff to the pods. There are also resident forums that show you what types of procedures you will be working on, like ashton said, they assist in all kinds of procedures even vascular repair. Here is a link that tells you the scope of practice based on each state, then private hospitals have their own restrictions. http://www.google.com/url?url=http:...QQFjAA&usg=AFQjCNH9mrbvI3_2dYBCEYjeDq41LAN_og

Hope this helps.
