Now im not asking if the knowledge obtained during the residency year is useful in other areas. My question is, if you do a residency and dont get a clinical job, and then decide to get a staff job and wait for a clinical job to open up in the area or at your hospital, are you viewed as a better candidate for that job compared to someone just coming out of the residency year? I guess my question is are new residency graduates valued over past residency graduates due how fresh the knowledge is in their minds? Or is a residency a residency no matter how long ago you did it? (Assuming it wasnt like ten years)

I don't have an exact answer to all your questions, but one of our PGY2 grads staffed here for several years before one of the PGY2 director positions became available which she now is.
