Getting connected through national organizations and having a position on their councils can lead to connections at residency programs. For example, in the PM&R-sphere, being on the national medical student councils through the American Osteopathic College of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AOCPMR) or Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP) can help lead to connections at PM&R residency programs with faculty that are also involved through AOCPMR and AAP leadership. I would think that getting involved from a student level at school organizations would be something to add to the application to maybe show longitudinal interest, but I think other things weigh heavier (letters of recommendation, board scores, publications, research, etc.)
