Hello! We here at the Detroit Wayne County Health Authority have a rather unique program opportunity that we're opening up to non-traditional applicants.

Our program is entering its 3rd year, and is entirely unique from nearly every residency in the US as we are not funded by CMS. Our program is funded by a HRSA grant which as a result means we are not bound by the rules and regulations of the standard Match. We can interview, offer contracts and accept applicants entirely outside the match, and as a result we tend to receive some unique applicants.

Currently in our program we have a very successful PGY-3 who was utterly fed up with OB/GYN and decided she needed a change. They entered our program as a PGY-2 having been given standing for their first year as an OB/GYN resident.

Another resident we have is a PGY-2 with a Comlex Step-3 over 650 who had a rather unfortunate outcome in the couples match and decided to switch specialty to be close to their significant other. They chose the program despite having many opportunities as geographic location was more important to them.

Our applicants tend to be people in unique situations or timelines who would otherwise not fit perfectly into the standard match schedule but who are hard working students who want an opportunity to succeed. We're looking for people who due to circumstances have had less that optimal opportunities, but are looking to work hard and succeed in a relatively young program given the chance to show what they are capable of as residents.

We're interested in applicants who have passed their boards appropriate to their level of training. If you are in the stage of having taken (or re-taken) those boards and not yet received your score report, please contact.

We are open to applications from couples looking to relocate, people looking to transfer out of their current unhappy situation or nearly any sad story appropriate for a top 24 American Idol contestant. Just be willing to work hard for the opportunity to succeed and obtain a board certification in Family Practice.

As of 3/10/2015 we have 4 open positions for incoming first years and 1 open position for incoming 3rd years. This is subject to change and the possibility of doubling up a spot for a particularly good applicant so please do contact if interested.

To answer a question asked privately, no, Allopathic applicants (MD) or IMG who do not possess or will posesss a D.O. degree cannot apply for the position due to the merger. While there is a merger of Allopathic and Osteopathic residencies in process, until this actually happens we cannot accept applications from non D.O. students or graduates.

I sent you an email, I am most definitely a unique applicant and I am extremely interested in your program.
