Hello to all,

Has anyone received interview invitations or any replies for cornea fellowship yet?

Thanks.

I'm applying for Glaucoma, thought about making a thread but theres always so few fellowship applicants on here, ill just chime in on this one. So far ive gotten an interview from UTSW. LSU-NO asking for supplemental docs. :luck:

Any thoughts on what the top cornea fellowship programs are for those interested in staying in academics?

What is the average # of applications one submits for a successful Cornea fellowship match?

I applied to 30 programs. If you think about it, 35 bucks is not worth missing a chance for interview. I did not apply to places I knew I didn't want to live in or heard bad reviews from several people. What do you all think?

Anyone know how many cornea programs there are in the country? I'm assuming not every ophthalmology department has one.

About 60 programs but some of them have more then one spot (Wilmer has 5!). Not sure if I know how many available spots per year. Anyone did the math?

Does such a large program size equate to a strong program? How do the cornea fellowships at Bascom Palmer, Wills, or Duke compare?

Correction: there are 52 clinical programs in the US (excluding research only programs). All together they have 82 spots (28 programs with 1 spot, 21 with 2 spots and a few with 3,4,5).

Rejection from Devers (Mark Terry) by email and invitation to Washington U, St. Louis (phone).

How legit is the Price Vision cornea fellowship? Can any recent or current fellows of PVI relate their experiences there?

rejection - UCLA, MEEI (email)

rejection from UCLA and MEEI too

Invite to Devers (Dr. Terry) 10/18 or 10/29 by email

Interviews from UIC (Chicago) and Cole (Cleveland) by email.

I feel like I'm in a monologue here :)

How many PKPs, DSAEKs, DALKs, complicated phacos etc would you consider to be needed for a "good" Cornea fellowship?

Yeah it has been oddly quiet on here...

Interviews from Irvine, Pittsburgh, Davis

Pitt - 10/19 (only date)
Tufts - 10/12 or 10/19
Columbia - 10/19

It's a shame that all of these programs fall on the same date. I am sure they lose out on a lot of applicants because of the conflicts.

im looking to switch my price interview - its on tues oct 2nd..anyone else have another date that they are looking to swap?

Anyone have an opinion of Irvine vs. Tufts? My only "concern" with Irvine is that the Cornea faculty are relatively young. And Steinert may be too busy with his chairman activities.

yest: BU

today: doheny, cornell. (pittsburgh added another date fyi)

did not apply to irvine - not sure. heard its ok. i guess it depends what ur geographic preference is as well

When are the dates for Cornell and Pittsburgh?

I'm really surprised no one has compiled a list of pro's/con's of the different Cornea fellowship programs. Perhaps we could start one to assist future applicants in their fellowship search?

It is interesting how most of these programs are relatively low in surgical cornea cases. Like around 30-50 transplants. I guess that is a reflection of the low numbers of transplants being done in general. Also it is amazing that many of these programs have almost no phaco experience. Especially the places with great academic reputations. There are a few "big names" that I cannot consider ranking!

The idea is you're supposed to learn phaco during residency. No reputable attending will let you phaco their private VIP patients.

I understand their "rationale" but cataract skills can get awfully rusty after 1 year off. I don't care if you have done 10,000 cataracts -- it is still nice to keep up your skills by doing a few phacos a week. And since most cornea specialists *will* be doing cataract surgery in practice, I believe that cornea fellowships should help maintain those skills.

I think that many Cornea fellowship programs should only have one position. True, it's nice to have a co-fellow to bounce ideas off of, but the surgical volume for many of these places seems relatively low. I think that many of these programs have multiple fellows simply so that the attending clinics are always staffed with a fellow.
