After seeing many Cal vs UCLA vs USC for Pre-Med posts (elsewhere and here), I've decided to share some information with you guys.

There are lots of students out there who have received their acceptance letters from these three schools and might wonder: "which is a better school in terms of preparation for medical school?"
Or, you are just wondering how to satisfy med school requirement at Cal, USC or UCLA.

Well, I am not here to give you guys my opinion, but I am simply here to break them down(objectively).
You can decide for yourself after reading this post.

This may be helpful to someone in the future, but everyone that's gotten in this cycle has already committed to one campus. The only way I could think of that someone can switch right now is if they are committed to a UC and decide to lose their deposit and take USC up on their offer. (They can even become a Spring admit as USC will still let you commit up until Jan)

Not super important but, UCB also has 3 week and 8 week summer school sessions and UCLA also has a 9 week session :)
Thank you OchemOficionado! I'll make that correction.
And yeah, it's too late for admitted students now, but it might help others in the future.

Dude, get a grip.

All of those places will have 1st generation Asian premeds, busted curves and broken dreams.

Good luck!

for USC's Phys 152: Electricity & Magnetism, you also need math 126 (Integral Calculus) and math 226 (Multivariable Calculus)

226 can be taken as a co-req

you should update that

I think you also have to take LS 23L at UCLA.

UCB has a dedicated study week ("dead week") before finals.

@efle is it? My bad lol most of my friends went to schools where it wasn't.

@efle The latter, although class time was normally dedicated for review and such.

Don't worry, KBBQ isn't a secret anymore. Everyone knows KBBQ boosts energy and morale among students. HEHEHE

Interesting! Did they not have a dedicated finals week at all, or they did but it was immediately after a normal week of classes?
Went to two different Universities. One had a 1/2 dead week that picked up finals Wed. following last week of school. One gave you just the weekend and started finals the next week. A whole week is definitely not standard (but would be awesome)

This is for the calculus-based physics pathway that will also have you competing against engineering students for curved grades. Whoever reads this, don't be a hero; take the non-calculus 135 sequence and save yourself some sanity despite the questionable professors that teach the sequence. Physics should basically be a Khan Academy course anyways.

Yeah. 135 only requires math 108, which is precalculus. It makes sense to take this instead of much difficult physics.

UCB requires students to take at least 1 term of calculus to be ready for their "easy" Physics 8A.
Unfortunately for UCLA, all students must take their 3rd term of calculus in order to be ready for their calculus based physics.

Most of us got the decision letter on April 28th (4pm it was and idk about other UCs haha), and my senses kicked in that I should re-up this and do other UCs now. I was putting it off for few months! If there are other UC/USC graduates who wants to share their tips/story, please do so! It'll help the new admits to learn about something you have in your hands.

For UCLA, they're changing the LS 1-4 series to LS 7ABC so only 3 classes now. I believe 23L will be the same. They will also be changing the physics 6 series I believe. You do not need to take Chem 153L, and if you're in phy sci/engineering department, you do not need 30CL. Hell some schools don't even require 30BL or 30C.

I enjoyed my time at UCLA. If you're deadset on pre-med I would definitely choose it over Cal, just because Cal has grade deflation while UCLA does not. If you have any plans on changing to engineering or business, I would go to Cal, though UCLA is not bad in those respects. No comment on USC.

The acceptance numbers are hard to interpret because of reporting bias and small sample size, unfortunately.
For example, UCLA has had about 1,000 applicants a year including the year in which you report 124 applicants.

I'm moving this to hSDN as it will be more useful to high school students looking to choose a college.

Thank you very much! At the time I was writing this, I didn't know what hSDN stood for. I was going to do a request on title change too (To: All UC & USC pre-med comparison)

For UCLA, they're changing the LS 1-4 series to LS 7ABC so only 3 classes now. I believe 23L will be the same.

Not entirely true. Although they are in the process of changing over to the LS7ABC series, you still have to take 4 classes. You would have to take LS 107 (Genetics) along with the 7ABC series...and23L. One very good thing about the change to the 7 series is you no longer have to wait to take most of your Chem first. It will make it much easier to jump into your upper div courses in your Jr year than it was before.

The roll out of the new Physics 5ABC series (beginning next year) will be much less confusing that the LS 7ABC roll out because the new courses match up 1 for 1 with the old Physics 6ABC series. You can begin the 6 series and switch over to the 5 series at any point. That can not be done with the changes in the LS series, you must complete the entire series once you begin it.

I've been busy lately with documents, tests and presentation coming up.. x.x
I'll update it to all UCs this weekend! It'll help students for the next 2-3 weeks to decide which UC would be the best for them.

dentist here but took all the same classes with the pre-meds when I was at USC. Not sure if they do it anymore but some of the lower division classes (BISC 120/220 & CHEM 105ab) were all curved to a B-. I found the Chemistry department better run than the Biology department. The Physics department was much more forgiving and curved to a B and I think 25% of the class got an A. The professors in Physics were much better too with more choices to pick on whose class to enroll in. I'd try to take organic chemistry somewhere else over the summer to be honest, the faculty may have changed since its been a while but the professors that taught were horrible.

Once you reach the upper division courses, though, thats where the fun begins, Physiology and Molecular Biology had like 30-35% of the class getting A/A-. Biochemistry was tough (at least when it was back in my day) but at worst you should get no lower than a B. Neuroscience was also an awesome grade booster too. Taking science classes through the Gerontology program also helps boost the GPA while taking legit upper division science classes.

Finally, Math 125 its possible to get an A, there was always a professor that had a good reputation. I'd also take a statistics course through the health promotion department or Psychology department to have a better chance of landing a better grade.
