How important are clerkship grades in terms of residency applications - high pass versus pass?

Depends on how many people at your school are getting each score and how the MSPE represents that information. A pass is worse if 80% of people are getting high pass. Less bad if 80% are also simply passing. Step 2 is more important though.

More important than preclinical by a long shot. Way less important than a boards failure and step 2 score.

That being said you better murder the specialty you want. For example if you want Surgery Id do everything I could to Honors that rotation.

Super hard to interpret accross different schools. Especially for DOs because there is so much of a wide variety in the grading system schools use. Some use ABCDE, some P/HP/H. Some a percent grade. Some P/F. It's all over the place. MD schools traditionally are P/HP/H. And both DO and MD schools have some schools where getting HP/H is very difficult, and others where everyone gets HP/H. So it makes looking at grades very difficult, and if schools provide quartile data, that at least gives you some idea where the student actually falls within their peer group at their school. Some schools also don't provide you with that.
